We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for endorsing this painting as an autograph work by Bosschaert. Jan-Baptist Bosschaert, who was active in Antwerp, was a renowned painter of still lifes. In spite of his huge oeuvre, only little is known of him. He only joined in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1689, after the death of his teacher, Jean Baptiste de Crépu. He succeeded in enriching the purely decorative character of still life painting with scenic elements. the present painting focuses on the fight for the Christian faith. The medallion is based on antique reliefs and refers to the beginnings of Christianity.
